Andrea Courtemanche is particularly interested in helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many of Courtemanche’ s students plan to seek careers as behavior analysts for children with autism and other disabilities. She wants her students to embrace the idea that “applied behavior analysis is a part of daily life and it goes way beyond just helping children with autism.” By looking at environmental relationships, Courtemanche says, her students “can reach out and tackle any socially important problem.”
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Courtemanche is trained to develop and assess interventions. She teaches her students how to evaluate techniques to increase adaptive behaviors, decrease maladaptive behaviors, and effectively use these approaches to help individuals have a better quality of life. Courtemanche will be working with the Hospital for Special Care (New Britain, Conn.) to provide the same services for children and adolescents in the local communities.
Courtemanche’s own research focuses on self-injurious behaviors and aggression in children and adults with disabilities. Her research seeks to understand how environmental and biological variables contribute to developmental challenges. She hopes her research will help inform the development of interventions that effectively prevent and treat challenging behaviors throughout the lifespan.
