Christine Kohn’s research is motivated by a desire to help others. She has a deep appreciation for seeing research put to work to effectively assist patients’ medical needs. “It is that applied knowledge and inquisitiveness that made research come alive for me,” said Kohn. “I think USJ’s philosophy of innovation allows teachers to reach students in multiple ways. As a professor, you are not just lecturing, but have to ability to work in small groups and mold different learning styles,” said Kohn. “That non-traditional learning appeals to me.”
As a researcher, Dr. Kohn fuses her clinical experience and judgment with her research on how medication is utilized. As a professor, she says it is particularly necessary for current and future health care providers to have some basic skills and expertise when determining if new research studies should be incorporated in their medical practices. Having clinical experience in addition to strong research skills, Kohn says, allows a pharmacist to intervene on a patient’s behalf. “Having that clinical background allows me to do clinically relevant research that is timely, readily translatable, and can more quickly impact patient care,” said Kohn. “Anyone can read a study, but it doesn’t necessarily translate to changes in clinical practice.” At USJ, she teaches Pharmacy students how to look beyond theoretical knowledge toward application.
Dr. Kohn’s research includes using meta-analytical techniques and economic models to review the comparative effectiveness of newer medications versus the current standards of care. Both the public and private sectors have to justify covering these medicines in their formulary. Economic modeling allows us to assess the economic ramifications of medications, and their impact on the health care system. “We want to be transparent and evidence-based in our modeling, so that if there is a benefit, we can illustrate that in our studies.” she said. Kohn’s research also includes comparing the efficacy and side effects of drugs, as well as costs and quality of life, to measure outcomes and guide clinical decision-making. Her research directly impact guidelines in a clinically-relevant and timely manner. At USJ, Kohn teaches Pharmacy students how to evaluate a new clinical study for its accuracy and relevancy, and make the case for or against new medications.
