Admission Process & Criteria

Take the next step. Learn more about our application process.

Interested in taking graduate coursework and/or receiving a graduate degree? You must first determine whether you want to apply as a non-degree-seeking student or a degree-seeking student.

Non-degree vs. degree-seeking student

  • A degree-seeking student is interested in being admitted to a graduate degree program. Degree-seeking students are limited to taking six credits of coursework before you must be admitted to a graduate degree program. Once admitted, there are no limitations to the number of credits within that program. Coursework completed by a degree-seeking student admitted in a master’s degree program is eligible for financial aid.
  • A non-degree-seeking applicant is interested in completing coursework outside of a graduate degree program.

Note: If you are attempting to be re-admitted to a graduate program because you were previously withdrawn or dismissed, you should complete the same process designated for degree-seeking students. Your department will review all previous credits during your appointment to complete the Planned Program of Study (more information below).

Step-By-Step Process for Degree-Seeking Students

  1. Complete the degree-seeking application. Once your application is processed, you will receive a graduate admission packet through standard mail with:
    • A welcome letter with your student ID number and a list of admission requirements
    • A supplemental insert that helps you complete the admission requirements
    • Login credentials for the Graduate Admissions portlet of MyUSJ (where you can see what admissions requirements have been submitted)

Note: The Dietetic Internship program has a separate application from other graduate degree programs.

  1. Begin submitting the admission requirements. As admission requirements are submitted, your record will be updated in both the physical file and in the online database. Once you submit the following, you can complete your initial registration (Step 5) before being admitted to the graduate degree program:
    • A $50 application fee
    • A transcript showing degree conferral from a regionally-accredited institution and that you meet the minimum GPA and course prerequisites of your selected program
    • Once all admission requirements have arrived, you will be notified by email with further instructions on how to complete your initial registration, if applicable. You are limited to a maximum of six credits before you must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  1. Submit all admission requirements. After submitting all admission requirements, a copy of your file will be sent to the program director of the program in which you applied. Once you have submitted all admission requirements you may be required to contact the program director to complete the Planned Program of Study. (The program director's contact information will be listed in your admissions requirements if this is required for your program).
  1. Complete the Planned Program of Study. Once complete, the program director will inform the Office of Graduate Admissions of the department’s decision regarding your admission. The Office of Graduate Admissions will then inform you of this decision through standard mail and email.
  1. Complete and submit your initial registration on the paper registration form. Once the initial registration is processed by the Registrar’s Office, you will be sent an email informing you of your login credentials for USJ email, MyUSJ, and Blackboard accounts.  The majority of degree-seeking students will be able to complete any future registrations through MyUSJ, with the exception of students who have been admitted to a program that controls its own enrollments.  Students in those programs should contact the office manager or program director to complete.

Step-By-Step Process for Non-Degree-Seeking Students

  1. Complete the non-degree-seeking application. Once your application is processed, you will receive an application packet through standard mail with:
    • A welcome letter with your student ID number and a list of admission requirements
    • A supplemental insert that helps you complete the admission requirements
    • An email with login credentials for the Graduate Admissions portlet of MyUSJ (where you can see what admissions requirements have been submitted)
  2. Begin submitting the admission requirements. As admission requirements are submitted, your record will be updated in both the physical file and in the online database. The admission requirements are:
    • A $50 application fee
    • A transcript showing degree conferral from a regionally-accredited institution and that you meet the minimum GPA and course prerequisites of your selected program
  3. Submit all admission requirements. Once all admission requirements have arrived, you will be notified by email of your status with further instructions on how to complete your initial registration, if applicable. Note: Students that do not meet the requirements of their selected program are not eligible to take courses as a non-degree-seeking student. You may take additional coursework outside of the University of Saint Joseph to improve your academic background and then re-apply.
  4. Complete and submit your initial registration on the paper registration form. Once the initial registration is processed by the Registrar’s Office, you will be sent an email informing you of your login credentials for USJ email, MyUSJ, and Blackboard accounts.  All future registrations must also be submitted using the paper registration form.
