The 10th Annual 5 X 5 Dance Festival

5X5 Dance FestivalThe University of Saint Joseph (USJ) will present the Tenth Annual 5 x 5 Dance Festival featuring five collegiate ensembles and six professional companies along with a master class sampler from October 18 – 21, 2012.  All events will take place in The Bruyette Athenaeum's Hoffman Auditorium located on the University of Saint Joseph’s West Hartford campus.   • The 5 x 5 Dance Festival kicks off with a showcase on Thursday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. Critics and audiences cheer as Taylor 2 introduces the athleticism, humor and range of emotions found in Paul Taylor’s work. Joining a long list of directors who were distinguished former Taylor 2 dancers, Andy LeBeau became Director of Taylor 2 in January 2009. Taylor 2 has been described by the Aspen Times as “a major achievement and a significant rite of passage in the dance world.” The Herald Sun adds, “Their work is undeniably beautiful and incredibly romantic—danced with a joyful abandon!”
  • The event continues with a showcase on Saturday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. and will feature original choreography from five collegiate ensembles: University of Saint Joseph, Naugatuck Valley Community College, Central Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Trinity College, and  six professional companies: dancEnlight,  Exit 12 Dance Company, Ballet Theatre Company, Elm Street Dance Collective, Full Force Dance Theatre, Scapegoat Garden, Special Guest: Spark Movement Collective.
  • A master class sampler will be offered at the Tenth Annual 5 x 5 Dance Festival on Friday, October 19, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Classes will take place on the stage located in The Bruyette Athenaeum’s Hoffman Auditorium at the University of Saint Joseph. The dance master class package is $45 for all classes; or, classes can be taken individually for $20 each. The goals of the 5 x 5 Dance Festival are to provide opportunities for interface and sharing among pre-professional and professional artists; to foster a collaborative spirit among dance companies; to provide Connecticut dance audiences with a festival offering multiple dance genres and diverse cultures. The weekend will culminate with USJ’s Carol Autorino Center receiving the Connecticut Dance Alliance 2012 Distinguished Achievement in Dance Award on Sunday, October 21 - reception at 4:30 p.m.; award presentation at 5:30 p.m. in The Bruyette Athenaeum’s Hoffman Auditorium.
