University of Saint Joseph Receives Davis Educational Foundation Grant to Support Creation of a Center for Teaching and Learning
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has been awarded a two-year grant in the amount of $147,125 to support the creation of a Center for Teaching and Learning, which will expand the professional development opportunities available to the University’s full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty. The grant was received from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarkets, Inc.
Under the leadership of USJ Provost Michelle M. Kalis, Ph.D., the Center for Teaching and Learning will build upon the University's steadfast commitment to assist faculty in augmenting their ability to provide a value-centered education that prepares University of Saint Joseph students as global citizens, lifelong learners, critical thinkers and informed decision makers. Guided by evidence and best practice in scholarship, USJ's Center for Teaching and Learning will:
- Promote initiatives that enhance the critical reasoning of students across all disciplines
- Enhance faculty dialogue and development in all aspects of pedagogy including design, delivery and assessment
- Enhance the effective use of technology
- Assist faculty in adapting teaching strategies to respond to diverse learners
- Provide a new faculty orientation program
- Support the development of professional and scholarly pursuits within the faculty
"I look forward to the development of the Center as a resource for faculty at the University of Saint Joseph," Dr. Kalis said. "USJ faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching and the Center for Teaching and Learning will be an outstanding addition to our institution."
In addition to this generous grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, this project has received wide-ranging program development and financial support from the University of Saint Joseph community.
