USJ Business Administration Professor Wins Teaching Excellence Award
Marie G. Kulesza, M.S., CPA, assistant professor of Business Administration at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has recently been selected as the 2011 - 2012 recipient of the Reverend John J. Stack Teaching Excellence Award. A resident of Plantsville, Conn. and a Certified Public Accountant, Professor Kulesza earned her M.S. from the University of Hartford and a B.S. from Central Connecticut State University. She has been teaching at the University of Saint Joseph since 2008. As the winner of the Stack Award, Professor Kulesza will deliver the Convocation address at the start of the fall semester on August 28.
The Reverend John J. Stack Teaching Excellence Award carries a proud tradition at the University of Saint Joseph in recognizing members of the faculty who have made outstanding contributions to student learning. In essence, this honor celebrates the very best in teaching - bringing a depth of scholarship to the classroom that inspires students and fosters academic achievement.
In making this award presentation, USJ Provost Michelle M. Kalis, Ph.D. remarked, “Professor Kulesza devotes considerable attention to, and more importantly appreciates and respectsthe diverse learning needs of students. For instance, she understands that students in the Program for Adult Learners are better prepared to draw upon real-life applications from their workplace experiences and incorporates those in her teaching. As for students in the Program for Women who may not have such experience, she utilizes their greater comfort with technology to develop simulations that help them understand real-life applications. The same depth of thought, effort, and willingness to adapt to student needs were also evident in the development and teaching of Professor Kulesza’ s popular course in the First-Year Seminar program, ‘Going Green: Making Your Money Work for You.’ Additionally, Professor Kulesza teaches in the graduate program, making her one of the few University of Saint Joseph faculty who works with all three of our student populations: undergraduate, graduate and adult learners. Professor Kulesza also engages her students in promoting the mission of USJ by involving them in her community service work with the Co-Opportunity Program, as a volunteer site coordinator and tax preparer for low income individuals and families in the Greater Hartford area.”
USJ students who nominated Professor Kulesza for the Reverend John J. Stack Teaching Excellence Award offered enthusiastic praise: “Professor Kulesza is a model individual and sets very high ethical standards for herself and for her students.” Another student noted, “Professor Kulesza is not only a seasoned accounting professional, but she is also dedicated to continuous learning.”
