USJ Celebrates Accelerated Second Degree Nursing Graduates at Pinning Ceremony

The University of Saint Joseph department of Nursing, clinical faculty, administration, family, and friends honored 21 graduates of the Accelerated Second Degree in Nursing (ASD) Program on Aug. 18, 2017 in a pinning ceremony at the Bruyette Athenaeum’s Hoffman Auditorium. Students in this cohort began the nursing program last May and completed 53 credits of a rigorous nursing curriculum in 15 months. The pinning ceremony is often referred to as a ‘nursing graduation’ and is a very special and time-honored tradition that occurs at the completion of a nursing program. The ceremony recognizes and welcomes new nursing graduates into the nursing profession as they transition from their academic program and prepare to enter a professional practice role.  Each graduate was pinned by a registered nurse that was either a faculty member, family, friend or mentor.

Theodora Sirota, Ph.D., APRN, CNL, department of Nursing Chair, said, “Today is a very special event in the life of every graduating professional nurse; where he or she receives their pin which symbolizes the nursing profession and school they attended. We are very proud to give them their pins today.”

The students invited guest speaker, Mimi Snyder, Ph.D., RN, to speak at their ceremony. Dr. Snyder is the former University of Saint Joseph director of Traditional Undergraduate and Accelerated Nursing Programs. In addition, the ceremony included the reciting of the nursing pledge, and a series of student awards.

“We’ve come a long way, and its been a great learning experience. The professors and clinical faculty are incredible,” said Patty Cook, ATC, EMT, Assistant Athletic Trainer.

Some of the institutions that graduates are currently being interviewed and accepted to include Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital. Congratulations Class of 2017!
