Angela D. Washington, LCSW

Angela Washington’s unique ability to listen to an individual’s story with patience and empathy has enabled her to build meaningful personal and professional relationships: “I have always been drawn to wanting to know what lies beneath the surface of a person, to know the reality behind the masks.”

Washington began her career in the human services field as a physical therapist, and it was in this role that she discovered her passion for listening to patients’ stories and addressing their individual needs. When Washington transitioned into a career in the social work field, she continued to emphasize the importance of storytelling. While working in a maximum security prison for males, Washington learned the value of humility and grew spiritually and professionally. “Through that experience of sharing my stories, showing compassion to those who many in society believe don’t deserve it and examining my own pathways in life, it led me to continually question who I really was and it strengthened me,” said Washington, “I found the art of forgiveness, a lesson well learned, a mirror of self-reflection and the gift of empathy helped to shape me in my work.”

In her role as the Field Education Coordinator, Washington enjoys having the opportunity to observe students’ academic and personal growth and help students apply their knowledge to real-life situations. “As a professional, I like to help create a cohesive atmosphere that is open and positive,” said Washington, “I believe that a classroom should use a combination of teaching methods, from didactic to experiential, with the purpose of providing a stimulating, interactive and collaborative classroom setting.”
