A Practitioner, A Teacher
Students in Heidi Smolka’s classroom benefit from her ongoing work as an APRN in a primary care practice and urgent care center. Working on the frontlines of primary care, Smolka uses her experience to challenge and enrich her students’ development. “These clinical practice sites enrich my teaching and support my own personal goals of working with clients to manage chronic illnesses and treat acute disease.”

Technology as a Learning Tool

Smolka’s earlier work as a medical technologist is evident in her commitment to employing new technologies that facilitate student learning. The College’s simulation lab gives students a safe environment to practice their clinical skills.

Working in Collaboration

“I am interested in simulation as a teaching strategy and have held numerous scenarios students using Sim Man and Sim Baby,” she said. “With the goal of collaboration, we create simulations that bring students together from Nursing, Social Work, Nutrition, and Pharmacy.”
