Maria A. Summa, Pharm.D., RPh, BCPS

Dr. Summa received her bachelor of science in Pharmacy from the University of Connecticut and her doctoral degree in Pharmacy from West Virginia University. She completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Mass.

Summa joined the University of Saint Joseph in 2010, after many years of service to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn., where she was most recently the director of Pharmacy Services. In this role, Summa was responsible for the planning, organization, and direction of the system’s multi-campus inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services and accredited pharmacy residency program; she also led a talented team of nearly 100 professional and technical individuals. During her tenure with Saint Francis, Summa established an ambulatory medication therapy management clinic that improved access to care and optimized chronic disease state management for underserved patients.

In July 2015, Summa was appointed chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration.  She provides department leadership in program planning, development, and assessment, and manages the department’s resources. Her additional responsibilities include the classroom and experiential education of Pharmacy students, with a focus on courses involving self-care, the pharmacotherapy of the endocrine system, and women’s health. She maintains a clinical practice at the Family Medicine Center at Asylum Hill in Hartford, Conn., where she partners with other health care professionals to optimize medication therapy and promote safe medication practices in primary care.

Summa has an active academic appointment as assistant clinical professor in the department of Family Medicine at the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine. She has held previous academic appointments as assistant professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and adjunct assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Connecticut, School of Pharmacy. Summa has served as a coordinator of Drug Information Services and clinical pharmacy coordinator for the Veterans Administration Connecticut Healthcare System.

Summa maintains active memberships in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the Connecticut Pharmacists Association.  She is a certified pharmacist immunizer, Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy, and was named as the Connecticut Pharmacists Association Daniel C. Leone Pharmacist of the Year for 2009. She has authored several peer-reviewed articles in a range of research areas, including the intersection of clinical nutrition and pharmacotherapy, health-systems management, and common ambulatory infections. Her research interests include the use of peer assessment to develop effective team skills in pharmacy students, the use of clinical decision tools to support evidenced-based patient care, and the prevention of prescription drug misuse.
