THE VALUE OF MENTORSHIP
Working alongside faculty mentors provided Maryam Jernigan-Noesi with her earliest clinical research experience. It also led to her post-doctoral work in Behavioral Intervention — namely, closing the gap between behavior health interventions and the availability of treatments in different settings. While passionate about her ongoing research, Jernigan-Noesi was excited to return to teaching in order to provide students with a similar experience. “I wanted to be full-time in an environment where I could teach and engage students in one setting and demonstrate how what we do in academia influences care, primarily mental health, in the community,” she said. “My intent is to create a student research group that involves mentoring, thus really providing students the opportunity to
FULFILLING A NEED
Working primarily with children, adolescents, and families, Jernigan-Noesi is committed to bringing social justice and health equity to marginalized populations. Prior to coming to USJ, she worked in conjunction with School Based Health Centers (SBHC), a national model that provides children access to health care, including mental health services. In her position at USJ, Jernigan-Noesi plans to continue this work with schools in Hartford and surrounding areas.
A Meaningful Alliance
“Working in academia, we have resources. Schools will trust you once they know you are not there just for research, but to address the needs of the students,” she said. The community-focused initiative aligns perfectly with the University’s Mercy values. Members of the greater community would benefit from receiving quality care and
USJ students would receive direct experience and engage in community-based research. Ultimately, this could lead to professional opportunities that prepare students for graduate school or career success.
