The Right Formula

As a kid, Raouf Boules was a math whiz. You know the type: Top of his class and genuinely happy to help his classmates with their math homework. “I loved the precision,” he said of his earliest experiences with arithmetic. As he grew, while many of his peers were playing with sticks and balls, Boules was playing with polynomials, coordinate axes, and midpoint formulas.

Making a Difference

Enthusiastically welcomed (in July, 2015) to the University of Saint Joseph as Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences, throughout his impressive academic career in mathematics, Boules had a hand in ushering thousands of students through the rigorous requirements of their math classes. Ultimately, he created and implemented pioneering programming to maximize student success, skyrocket student enrollment, and provide unique academic opportunities to those of all socioeconomic levels, within his most recent role as chairperson in the department of mathematics at Towson University.

“It’s always been meaningful for me to help students succeed. I really want to make a difference,” he shares. “Unlike history or the arts, math is highly linear,” he explains. “If a student missed a step along the way, we start from there. I’ve learned to recognize and address that cue in their eyes that says, ‘This isn’t sinking in.’”

Arriving in America

Born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, Boules earned his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and a master’s in Mathematics from the prestigious Alexandria University before emigrating to America to obtain his Ph.D. at The Catholic University of America (Washington, DC). He then joined Towson University (Towson, Md.), ultimately as chairperson in the department of Mathematics for a dozen years. He has published numerous papers in leading international journals, presented research at conferences worldwide, and co-authored a well-reputed book about electromagnetic signals.

Turning Stumbling Blocks into Stepping Stones

Teaching came naturally to Boules. His father was an English teacher – and a revered one. As a young boy, Boules recalls the respect his father earned in their community by his sincere interest in and dedication to his students. Since education was highly valued in his home and community, not surprisingly, Boules is devoted to assisting first-generation college students overcome obstacles to reach their educational goals. “It’s a game changer. They’re going after their big dream,” he said. “In this day and age, you have to have a college degree. If I can help them in any way, it’s a privilege.”
