Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Dr. Sanjay Gayakwad received his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmaceutics) from Mercer University, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Atlanta, GA and his masters degree in Organic Chemistry and bachelors degree in Chemistry from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, India.
Dr. Gayakwad has experience in both the academia and industry. Before joining USJ, Dr. Gayakwad worked as an assistant professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), where he was one of the founding faculty and taught courses in pharmaceutics/biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. Prior to that he worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a Formulation Development Scientist, developing oral solid dosage forms and supervising the manufacturing of phase I and II clinical trial materials. He has also worked as an R & D Scientist developing novel pathways for the synthesis of NCEs and generic drug molecules in India.
Dr. Gayakwad has broad research areas of interest. The first area involves the development of drug delivery technologies for efficient delivery of vaccines, proteins and peptides. The second area involves physico-chemical characterization and methods to enhance the physico-chemical stability of therapeutic proteins for stable formulation development.
Dr. Gayakwad is a recipient of several awards and is an active member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist (AAPS). He has authored or co-authored several scientific articles and has served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed scientific journals including European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Top Ten Reviewer), Journal of Controlled Release, Journal of Microencapsulation and Pharmaceutical Drug Development and Technology and has presented his research work at the national and international scientific meetings.
