Timothy Ferrarotti, DHSc, PA-C, DFAAPA

Director of Didactic Education

Assistant Professor for Physician Assistant Program

Joined USJ: 2015

At age 12, Timothy Ferrarotti already was on his way toward a career in health care. Formally trained and certified as a volunteer medical response technician (MRT), the young first responder developed an early passion for patient care by accompanying his father, a paramedic, on ambulance runs and hospital visits. Continuing his pursuit of a health care career, he became an emergency medical technician (EMT) and completed degrees Health Sciences, along with Physician Assistant certification. Ferrarotti was recognized for his outstanding performance and designated “Alumni of the Year” by the Quinnipiac University Physician Assistant program.

Since 1996, within his role as adjunct clinical and didactic instructor at Quinnipiac University, Ferrarotti taught a variety of classes including anatomy and genetics, as well as implemented a hybrid curriculum in research and writing. He applied his extensive knowledge of technology, a domain he enjoys leveraging for student learning, throughout the process. While valuing opportunities within the classroom to optimize student education, “the thrill is where theory meets practice,” he explained. “Students gain confidence in their skills, network with professionals, and often choose niches of interest from firsthand experience in healthcare settings.” As a preceptor for physician assistants, emergency medicine students, and nurse practitioners for 19 years, Ferrarotti has long valued supporting student success in “real world” environments.

In the summer of 2015, USJ enthusiastically welcomed Ferrarotti as part of a prominent team to develop and facilitate a program educating physician assistants. He serves as director of Didactic Education and assistant professor for the 28-month program, slated to launch in 2017, following phases of planning and accreditation. In addition to utilizing his expertise as professor and preceptor, he will access his longstanding experience as a physician assistant within hospital emergency rooms to educate students. Recognizing a link between his ER work experience and his position at USJ, Ferrarotti said, “The ER always has a door open to those in need, a core value of the Mercy Mission.”

Ferrarotti enjoys outdoor activities with his family in his free time including his “post” as assistant scout master/cub master on Boy Scouts camping trips with his three sons. “On the next trip, we’re building electronic radio kits and, of course, I’m teaching the Scouts first aid,” he said with a wide smile.
