Navigating your Academic Journey 

Academic Advisors are here to help you make the most of your USJ experience! As incoming first-year or transfer students, you will work with a professional advisor until your sophomore year when you’ll be assigned a faculty advisor in the department of your major.

We’re here to help you:

Explore and clarify your academic and career goals

• Choose and declare a major, minor, or certificate

Complete your USJ degree on time

• Select courses and prepare for registration each semester
• Make adjustments to your schedule (e.g. add, drop, or withdraw from a course, take more than 18 credits a semester)
• Understand Core Curriculum (General Education) and Major Program requirements
• Create a customized Academic Plan, tailored to your major, interests, and goals

Overcome academic challenges

• Learn skills and strategies to be a more successful student
• Return to good academic standing if placed on academic warning or probation
• Navigate university policies (e.g. grade appeals, course incompletes, calculating your GPA, repeat courses, leave of absence)

Transfer Credits into USJ

• Transfer Credit Equivalencies: Using USJ’s personalized Transfer Equivalency System (TES®) site will enable you to see the courses from other universities and how they equate to those at USJ. You can find AP and CLEP Equivalences in the TES site under “The College Board”
• AP Scores: If you took any AP exams, you need to send your scores from College Board (AP) to the University of Saint Joseph, Connecticut. Your high school will not send the scores for you! It is very important that you send your score(s) in as soon as possible, so they can be considered when creating the plan for your degree and you don’t end up taking a class you might already have credit for. 
• Early College Experience (ECE): If you took, or are taking, a class in high school that you got college credit for you need to reach out to the registrar’s office of the college that gave you the credit and ask for your final transcript to be sent to the University of Saint Joseph, Connecticut. Your grade on the high school transcript doesn’t mean that you received credit from the college! It is very important that you send your transcript(s) in as soon as possible, even if you are still taking the class. This will ensure the classes can be considered when creating the plan for your degree and you don’t end up taking a class you might already have credit for. 

Transfer Students

We want to ensure you make the best use of your previous experience in order to help you achieve your long-term goals. That’s why all students are assigned an advisor who meets with you to develop your individual plan of study. Transfer completing their first bachelor’s degree typically start with our professional advisors, who work in consultation with the department to ensure a smooth transition into USJ. Transfer students should we aware that:

• USJ has a residency requirement of 45 credits, and the last 24 credits counted toward a degree must be taken at USJ.
• The general education (Core Curriculum) requirements will vary for transfer students depending on the types of classes transferred and the total number of transfer credits accepted by USJ.
