Library Access & Resources for Off-Campus Students

You may access all of the library databases from home using EZProxy if you are a University of Saint Joseph student, staff member or faculty member.

• Go to the library homepage
• Select “Search the Collection” from the menu at the right of the page or from the center section of the page.
• Select “Research Databases” from the menu at the right of the page or from the center section of the page.

Once the database list that was chosen is displayed:

• Select the database you wish to search.
• Your user name is your USJ email address (e.g., [email protected]). Your password is the password you use to check your University of Saint Joseph email. Enter those and click the Login button.
• This will bring you into the database.

Please note that some databases will allow you to sign up for a free personal account so you can bypass EZProxy authentication in the future.

Authentication should require no configuration on the user’s part.

You must be a University of Saint Joseph student, faculty or staff to use these databases from home using EZProxy.

Some educational and medical work sites may block our EZProxy.

One way around this is to sign up for a free, personal account at databases that allow this so you can bypass the EZProxy authentication (but you will have to be connected through the EZProxy first to do this).

You can also contact your work site’s Information Technology Department and request that they unblock EZProxy.

Online databases to which the University of Saint Joseph library subscribes are restricted for use by University of Saint Joseph students, faculty, and staff.

To provide access to University of Saint Joseph users, EZProxy is used. EZProxy performs two primary functions.

• Authenticates users like students, faculty, or staff by requiring a login, thus ensuring compliance with vendor restrictions.
• Serves as an on campus intermediary (with valid IP address) by passing information between off campus users and restricted online databases.

Try typing in your email user name and password you use to check your University of Saint Joseph email again. If you believe that you typed the information in correctly and are still having problems logging in, you may wish to:

• Contact [email protected] for assistance.

Both EZProxy and certain databases send “cookies” when you connect to them to verify, during your session, that you are an authorized user. If your browser reports an error receiving a “cookie,” it may be currently set to disallow cookies.

EZProxy delivers error pages to users for certain common problems. These usually have the library’s header and information relevant to explaining the problem and solution.

There are a variety of common errors that occur during general surfing of the internet. When they occur, the webserver (or web browser) sends an error page for you to view – usually without a lot of explanation. These may or may not be related to EZProxy. Two common Internet Errors are:

• 404 Errors (Page Not Found)
• “Server not Found or DNS Error”

Users may get these errors for a variety of reasons:

• An incorrect URL, outdated link, or a missing page
• Attempting to use a company or ISP’s proxy server to access resources set up to use EZProxy

First, check to see if this is happening for more than one database or database vendor.

Whenever you get an error page, especially one that does not come from EZProxy, it is important that you note what the error page says, the URL you were trying to access (and where from), and other relevant information. Then email [email protected] to report the problem and get assistance resolving it.

When you receive these errors in your browser, it often points to browser incompatibility or firewall and DNS issues. To resolve the browser incompatibility, try a different browser other than the one you are currently using. We recommend Firefox.

Browsers:
We are not aware of any browsers that are incompatible with EZProxy. There are database vendors that are incompatible with certain browsers, though, and in such instances, EZProxy does not change that incompatibility.

Safari browser on MAC operating system sometimes does not work well with some databases. We recommend trying Firefox.
