Program Requirements
- The MHA requires submission of all transcripts, two letters of recommendation and an essay.
- Students must keep a GPA of 2.67 or higher. Grades of D or F may result in a student being placed on probation.
- The internship is a requirement for the program; only students who have worked full-time in a healthcare setting for at least three years in a management role may apply for a waiver of the internship requirement and complete a capstone project instead. Career Opportunities for Healthcare Administration
Most managers in the healthcare sector work in acute care hospitals or long-term care facilities such as retirement homes and group practice facilities. According to U.S. News and World Report (2023), demand for healthcare managers has resulted in the significant expansion of this field in Connecticut. This growth is driven by the large “baby boomer” population needing more healthcare in hospitals, an increase in the number of group practices and retirement homes, and the need for administrators to work in these facilities.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in 2021 indicated that there are 6,600 medical and health service managers employed throughout Connecticut earning an average salary of $130,510, placing the state in the top 10 average salary in this sector.
National BLS statistics reveal that both the size and compensation levels within this job area have experienced considerable increases throughout the country. The overall median pay for medical and health service managers in the U.S. was $101,340 per year in 2021 (an increase of 7% since 2015). The total number of jobs in this field in 2021 was 136,200 (an increase of 31% since 2015). The BLS projects that the job outlook for healthcare administrators will remain extremely strong through 2031, with an estimated 28% increase in the total number of healthcare management jobs.
