About USJ’s Graduate Program in Biochemistry

  • You may culminate your degree with either a thesis or non-thesis option, each of which results in 30 graduate-level credits and a Master of Science degree.
  • Courses include Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Medicinal Chemistry, Introduction to the Biochemistry of Cancer and more.
  • The program provides students with unique opportunities to broaden your application of chemistry and biology by taking courses such as Toxicology, Forensic Chemistry, Biochemistry of Cancer and Biochemistry of Obesity and Diabetes.

Thesis

This option is for a limited number of students who must receive prior approval of their research proposal by the program director and a thesis advisor. If approved for this option, the student enrolls in CHEM 598 Research Seminar (3) and CHEM 599 Master’s Thesis (3) as part of the 30 credits. Students on the thesis track will present and defend their thesis as a culminating activity in lieu of a written comprehensive exam.

Comprehensive Exam

All students in the non-thesis program must pass a written comprehensive examination after completing at least 24 credits in the graduate program, including a B- in all required courses. Students will take 3 individual exams coming from all of their required courses along with 3 selected elective courses.

Courses and Student Workload

The online Masters Degree in Biochemistry at the University of Saint Joseph caters to working professionals. Because of this, the expected course load each semester is 2 courses. If you wish to enroll in more than 2 courses in a given semester, please contact the Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Program Director, Dr. Ellen Anderson, to discuss workload considerations.
