The USJ Institute for Latino Community Practice prepares undergraduate and graduate students for culturally and linguistically competent leadership in their professions.

(Above) Book signing, and community discussion with Dr. Daisy Verduzco Reyes, writer, sociologist, scholar, college professor, and author of Learning to Be Latino: How Colleges Shape Identity Politics (Rutgers University Press, 2018). In Learning to Be Latino Dr. Reyes describes the interactions of Latino students with their college environment and how the college environment affects the identity development and future of students. Dr. Reyes now serves as an Assistant Professor in the University of Connecticut Department of Sociology and El Instituto: Institute of Latino/a, Caribbean, & Latin American Studies. Dr. Ryes received her B.A. from University of California Santa Barbara, an M.A. from the University of California Irvine and a PhD. in Sociology from University of California Irvine.
Teaching & Learning
We provide academic programs, continuing education, certificates, and professional development opportunities that meet the needs of bilingual students and Latino professionals. We are committed to ongoing reflection and collaboration to develop best practices. Program examples include:
- Undergraduate courses such as (SOCW 209) Latinas & Their Worlds, and (SPAN 204) Latino Storytelling
- Graduate courses such as (LCPR 595) Practice with Diverse Populations
- The LCP Affiliated Faculty Group at USJ
Scholarship & Research
We engage in and promote scholarship and research that highlights the lived experiences of Latinos in the U.S. This includes conducting scholarly investigations, organizing conferences and creating other spaces in which Latino-focused research is shared.
Past projects include:
- The Frog Hollow, Te Escuchamos (We’re Listening) Project: This collaborative project identified the needs, wants, and dreams of the Latino community residents in the Frog Hollow neighborhood.
- The LCP “Listening Tour”: The director of the Institute for Latino Community Practice embarked on a year-long formal assessment of the program, which will result in a vision and strategy for developing academic, research, and community outreach programs.
Community Building & Partnerships
We are committed to building community as well as learning from/with community members within, outside, and across our University. Examples include:
- The ¡Adelante! “Circle of Support”: A mutual-aid, support, and resource group for ¡Adelante! students.
- Noche Latina: In collaboration with USJ’s Spanish program and Club Hispano, this event celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and features works of art from Latino artists as well as musical and dance performances.
- Latinas and Their Worlds Open Session: Held each October, this public open class session taught by Dr. Madeline Pérez honors the diversity of Latinos.
