Role of Graduate Nursing Preceptor

Serving as essential clinical educators, preceptors play a pivotal role in guiding graduate nursing students at the clinical site, fostering their knowledge development and practical skill refinement to ensure successful attainment of course objectives. Key responsibilities of a USJ graduate nursing preceptor include:          

  • Assuming complete care of the patient/client while supervising the student.
  • Promoting the professional growth of the student.
  • Documenting an evaluation of the student’s clinical skills at midterm and at the end of the semester, providing honest and constructive feedback.
  • Verifying and approving clinical hours documented by the student in Project Concert.
  • Communicating with course faculty regarding student progress.
  • Working collaboratively with a USJ faculty member to accommodate a required site visit.

Preceptors accomplish these responsibilities through a supportive, non-threatening relationship with students, helping them to become more therapeutic and competent in the role of an advanced practice nurse. 

Graduate Nursing Preceptor Qualifications

Preceptors must be licensed clinicians with at least one year experience in an advance practice role. Preceptors must hold a master’s degree or above and be board certified by their relevant board.

  • FNP Preceptors: Appropriate preceptors are Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Physician (MD/DO), and Physician Assistant  
  • PMHNP Preceptors: Appropriate preceptors are Nurse Practitioner practicing in a behavioral health setting, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Psychiatrist (MD/DO), Physician Assistant, Licensed Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, and Clinical Psychologist
