COMP 117: INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY

A survey course intended to introduce the role of technology in promoting and sustaining organizational innovation using an interdisciplinary approach. This is an important part of engineering, computer science, and business training. In this course students will learn the connection between innovation and problem solving, the legal and ethical responsibilities of innovation with technology, the 8- step problem solving/design method, the four types of innovation (basic research, breakthrough innovation, sustaining innovation, and disruptive innovation), the business of innovation, and an overview of innovative technologies. Topics include: Innovation and ethics, AI, IoT, augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain, 5G communication, 3D printing, Spreadsheets and Databases, Big Data, nanotechnology, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and hyper personalization. Materials will be drawn from the disciplines of business, computer science, engineering, ethics, science fiction, law, and education.

There are many helping professions, all of which are career fields that are dedicated to improving the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. This course will introduce students to helping professions as possible careers in fields such as Counseling, Education, Social Work, Public Health, Nutrition, Nursing, Human Services, and Victim Advocacy. Students will learn from professionals in the field, explore their own strengths as they relate to future careers, and learn about pathways to helping professions.


MGMT 101: BUSINESS IN A CHANGING WORLD

Everything – from medicine to sports to accounting and more – seems to be a business! We welcome our incoming students with an introductory course open to all students where we get to see what makes business enterprises tick from the inside out. We’d like to jump start your college career by getting you started on acquiring the tools you’ll need to get and hold the job of your dreams in a challenging, ever-changing, work environment. We’ll analyze current events and issues towards developing an appreciation of how we fit into our larger world. Come take a first look at business and prepare for your future!

This course provides an introduction to public health concepts and practice by examining the philosophy, purpose, history, organization, function, tools, activities and results of public health practice. The course will focus on basic material related to these foundations of public health: What is public health, analytical methods of public health, population-based approach of public health, social and behavioral factors in health, environmental issues, medical care and public health, and the future of public health.
