NSF Catalyst Scholars Program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Catalyst Scholarship at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) recognizes students who have a vision for a career in stem.
Open to first-year applicants of biology, chemistry, and biochemistry, ten students will be selected to receive an annual scholarship beginning in fall 2018.
This renewable scholarship includes access to early departmental advisement, academic support, mentored-research, coursework in scientific writing, and career networking opportunities.
Benefits of Becoming Part of the USJ CATALYST Scholar Program (CSP)
- Scholarship: Students selected to be CATALYST Scholars will receive a scholarship each year they are in the program, up to four years.
- Social Events: CATALYST scholars participate in social activities with faculty, peer mentors and fellow scholars.
- Early Faculty Advising/Mentoring: CATALYST scholars are assigned faculty mentors as a first-year student to discuss study habits, course concerns, plans of study, writing strategies, interviewing/networking techniques, professional goals, and graduate programs.
- Peer Mentors: CATALYST scholars will be connected with a peer mentor who will assist with college transition issues, expand students’ understanding of their particular discipline, and will connect scholars with opportunities to shadow seniors during their research projects.
- Mentored Research: Early introduction to mentored research will be encouraged in the sophomore year for all scholars.
- Scientific Writing and Critical Thinking: CATALYST scholars will participate in coursework and unique scientific writing activities designed to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills.
- Scientific Writing Course: This 2-credit course offered in freshman year will introduce students to scientific literature and guide them through reading, analyzing, synthesizing, and writing scientific conclusions.
- Academic Supports for Scholars: Scholarship recipients will be encouraged to participate in tutoring and study tables for STEM courses.

The University of Saint Joseph Has Been Awarded a Grant from the National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…” NSF is vital because they support basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.
Ten CATALYST scholarships have been awarded to students entering USJ as a first-year students in the fall of 2018. The students in this cohort are committed to majoring in biology, chemistry or biochemistry.
