Anthony Johnston is an Associate Professor of Education in the Secondary Education program (certification with major in subject area) and graduate (M.A.T.) programs, as well as an instructor in the Online Master’s for Teachers program. Johnston completed his Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture in the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. His scholarship focuses on adolescent identities, literacy, culture, and teachers’ work – all with a lens of equity and social justice. The author of numerous academic articles in his areas of research, he has written two books related to teaching in secondary schools. The first was co-authored (with Richard Beach), and titled, Identity Focused ELA Instruction: A Curriculum Framework for Diverse Learners and Contexts (Routledge, 2015). More recently, Johnston is the author of Introduction to Secondary Teaching: Blending Wisdom, Research, and Social Justice (Bloomsbury Press, 2025).
