Leonard J. and Elizabeth J. Agnew Endowed Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. Agnew, friends of the University, established this scholarship. Annual scholarships in their honor are awarded to deserving students.

Agnes Kelley Ahearn ’36 Scholarship

Established with a gift from her children, in memory of their mother. It is awarded to an undergraduate student with financial need.

Dorothy E. Barrett ’39 Scholarship

Established with a bequest from Dorothy Barrett ’39, this scholarship provides assistance to deserving students.

Stanley and Teresa Morocco Barton ’47, M’71 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is given by Teresa Morocco Barton ’47, M’71 for an English major, with priority given to students with a declared Writing minor or who were involved in producing their high school publication.

Kathleen Bednaz ’69 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Kathleen Bednaz ’69. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

Virginia Collins Bennett ’52 Endowed Scholarship

Ann Collins Fecke ’47 established this scholarship in memory of her sister, Virginia Collins Bennett ’52. This scholarship is awarded to a female student in need of financial aid.

Frances Williams Bent and James E. Bent Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Frances Williams Bent, a Trustee of the University from 1970 to 1976 and Trustee Emerita, 1984. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students.

Thomas and Theresa Berberich Endowed Scholarship

Established by Thomas and Theresa Berberich, this scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need.

Rose S. Bernhardt and G. Keith Bernhardt Scholarship

Two scholarships were established with a bequest from the estate of Rose and G. Keith Bernhardt. They are awarded to students with a Nursing major.

Leona Bordwell ’51 Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Leona Bordwell ’51 and provides assistance to deserving students.

Mary E. Brosnan ’44 Endowed Scholarship

Mary E. Brosnan ’44 left a bequest to the University to establish this scholarship, which provides assistance to students with financial need.

Margaret Callaghan Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Elizabeth McKone Seigle ’38 in memory of Margaret Callaghan, the person who inspired her to obtain her master’s degree in Social Work. It is awarded to an upper class student, with financial need, majoring in Sociology or Social Work.

Carol Canora ’57, M’68 Endowed Scholarship

The family of Carol Canora ’57, M’68 established this scholarship in her memory. Scholarships from this endowment are awarded to students with financial need.

Catherine Finelli Capuano ’73 Endowed Scholarship

Catherine Finelli Capuano ’73 established this scholarship to assist a female undergraduate student.

Sister Judith Ann Carey, RSM, M’72, H’91, DAA’16, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship

Established by Manon Cox, Ph.D., a USJ Trustee, to honor Trustee emerita, Judith Ann Carey, RSM, M’72, H’91, Ph.D., the scholarship is awarded to a student chosen by the University of Saint Joseph.

Robert J. Clark Endowed Scholarship

Robert J. Clark was a Trustee of the University of Saint Joseph from 1974 to 2001. Mrs. Clark established this scholarship in his memory. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students with financial need.

Class of ’62 Endowed Scholarship

Established by alumni from the Class of ’62, this scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior female student who demonstrates excellence in her chosen field, is actively involved in campus life, and has financial need.

Class of ’68 Endowed Scholarship

Established by the Class of ’68, this scholarship is awarded to a female junior or senior student who demonstrates strong academic achievement, is involved in student life, and has financial need.

Class of ’72 Endowed Scholarship

Established by the Class of ’72, this scholarship is awarded to a full-time student of the women’s college who has financial need. It is awarded to an incoming freshman and is renewable for up to four years.

Winifred E. Coleman, DAA’04 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established with gifts in memory of Winifred E. Coleman, DAA’04, who was president of USJ 1991 – 2004. It is awarded to a student with financial need.

Mary McGurk Collins ’36 Memorial Scholarship

Many friends gave gifts in memory of Mary McGurk Collins ’36 who was a Trustee of the University of Saint Joseph from 1974 to 1986 and who taught French at the University from 1937 to 1941. This scholarship provides assistance to a student with financial need.

Conochalla Family Endowed Scholarship

The Conochalla Family Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of Angela Conochalla ’63.  It is to be awarded to a student majoring in Child Study in need of financial assistance.

Nancy Peters Costello M’88, M’95 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.

Joanne K. ’85, M’98 and Jerry J. Coursey Jr. Scholarship

A bequest from Jerry Coursey Jr. was used to establish this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional age student.

Patricia Benny Cross ’56 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was a gift from Patricia Benny Cross ’56 to benefit a student in need of financial assistance.

DiLena-Cunningham Memorial Scholarship

Isabel DiLena Cunningham left a bequest to the University to establish an endowed scholarship to assist any undergraduate or graduate program student with preference for students studying Italian culture, Gerontology, or other helping professions including those focused on assisting the handcapped.

Mary E. and Joseph W. Cunningham Sr. Scholarship

Mary and Joseph Cunningham Sr. established this scholarship. They specified that the students who receive this scholarship must be deserving and have financial need.

Lena and Paul Cusano Endowed Scholarship

Pauline Panik taught Economics and Business from 1974 to 1982. This scholarship was established by Mrs. Panik in her parents’ names for a junior or senior Business major that is recommended by the Business department. The student must also have financial need.

Reverend James Edward Dargan Scholarship

Reverend James Dargan left a bequest to establish this scholarship that provides funds to students with financial need.

May A. Davis Endowed Scholarship

Attorney William Davis and his wife, Doris Davis, a Trustee, established this scholarship in his mother’s memory. This scholarship is awarded to graduate students in pastoral counseling and/or pastoral ministry with the elderly.

Raymond H. and Veronica A. Deck Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the family of Raymond and Veronica Deck. Mr. Deck was a University of Saint Joseph Trustee from 1968 to 1998, and a 1982 Honorary Degree recipient. It is awarded to students from Hartford County.

Margaret Derby ’79 Memorial Scholarship

Margaret’s many friends and family established this scholarship in her memory. It is awarded annually to an older undergraduate female student with financial need.

Michael J. DeVito, M.D. Memorial Scholarship

The Michael J. DeVito, M.D. Memorial Scholarship was established by Josephine Verrengia ’37 in memory of her brother-in-law. It is awarded to a deserving student in the Nursing program.

Colette Schauss DiLorenzo ’48 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Colette Schauss DiLorenzo ’48 Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Colette Schauss DiLorenzo ’48 by her children Anthony, Colette and Therese. It is to be awarded to a female student who is an immigrant or daughter of immigrants, with preference given first to a chemistry major and then to any science major.

Sadie T. Dully Memorial Scholarship

Thomas Dully left a bequest for this scholarship and named it in memory of his wife, Sadie. This scholarship is awarded each year to a student from Hartford or West Hartford.

Josephine Fallon Scholarship

Sister Marjorie Fallon established this scholarship in memory of her mother, Josephine Fallon. It is awarded to a student in the Adult Learner Program.

Dr. Anna Famiglietti ’62 Endowed Scholarship

A former educator, Dr. Anna Famiglietti ’62 established this scholarship. Scholarships in Dr. Famiglietti’s memory are awarded to a full-time female student with an Education major and financial need. Priority is given to non-traditional undergraduate students who are returning to study for a degree in Education.

Patricia Dallas Ferrari ’63 Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Patricia Dallas Ferrari ’63 to benefit an undergraduate student who comes from an economically disadvantaged background, has graduated from an inner city high school, is self-sustaining, or has been raised in the foster care system.

Margaret Collins Flanagan Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from John Flanagan. A scholarship is awarded annually to a student with financial need.

Anthony Forcucci Scholarship

This scholarship assists a student with financial need.

Anna Belle Franzis ’72 Endowed Scholarship

Marilyn Swift and Barbara Synos established this scholarship in memory of their cousin, Anna Belle Franzis ’72. In keeping with Anna’s academic and professional talents, this scholarship is awarded to a woman from Connecticut studying in the field of Mathematics or a related area, such as Accounting. Preference is given to students from the towns of Lower Naugatuck Valley, and if possible, to a first generation college student.

Howard Fromson Endowed Pharmacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Howard Fromson to benefit students attending the USJ School of Pharmacy.

Sandra B. Fromson, Ph.D. Scholarship

Established by Dr. Fromson, a Trustee of USJ. to augment a financial aid package for a University of Saint Joseph.

John Ganter Scholarship

Throughout John Ganter’s life, many people knew him as a dedicated social worker. After his passing, a scholarship was established with memorial donations. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Social Work who demonstrates a commitment to community service.

Carol E. Gourlie Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by non-traditional students to honor and recognize Carol E. Gourlie, the former faculty mentor and director of the University’s Advisement Center. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduates 24 years of age or older, sophomore status or higher, who have taken at least 15 credits at the University with an average of B or better. They must actively contribute to, and show service to, the University community.

Helen B. and Harry J. Gray Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established through the generosity of Helen and Harry Jack Gray and is awarded annually to a deserving student with financial need.

Marie Graycer ’60 Scholarship

A bequest from Marie Graycer ’60 established this scholarship. Scholarships in Ms. Graycer’s memory are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

Catherine M. Grimes ’40 Scholarship

Catherine Grimes ’40 established this scholarship to assist students studying in the Nutrition and Resource Management program.

Marion and C. Fred Guardo Scholarship

Two sisters, Dr. Carol J. Guardo ’61, DAA’80, H’08 and Anita Guardo Satriano ’53, established this scholarship to honor their parents. Scholarships are awarded to students with financial need who are preparing for a career in the health field.

Dr. Barbara Kavanagh Haight ’59 Endowed Fund for Nursing Research

This fund was established by Dr. Barbara Kavanagh Haight ’59 to encourage and support nursing faculty and/or nursing student research projects that will further nursing education, practice, and research.

Haloburdo/Knowlden Endowed Scholarship

At the retirement of Dr. Esther Haloburdo and Dr. Virginia Knowlden, two members of the University’s Nursing faculty, a scholarship was established with gifts in honor of their many years as dedicated educators. This scholarship is awarded to a student with a Nursing major in good academic standing.

Dr. James A. Hanaghan Memorial Scholarship

Marion Brazel Hanaghan ’51 established this scholarship in memory of her husband. These scholarships are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

Mary Baldwin Hart Memorial Scholarship
Harold and Ethel Hart Endowed Scholarship

Harold Hart, a Trustee of the University from 1968 to 1979, established these two scholarships. The Mary Baldwin Hart Memorial Scholarship was named in memory of Mr. Hart’s first wife. A second scholarship, the Harold and Ethel Hart Endowed Scholarship, was established with a bequest from Mr. Hart. Both are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Scholarship (current academic year only)

A grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving provides scholarships to students in the Program for Adult Learners to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Ruth A. Hummell, R.N. Endowed Scholarship

The Ruth A. Hummell, R.N. Endowed Scholarship was established by Ruth’s daughter, Dr. Monica Cipes.  It is to be awarded each year to a student enrolled full time in the nursing program.  Preference will be given to an individual who has experience as a C.N.A. or an L.P.N.  If these criteria cannot be met, the scholarship will be awarded to a full time nursing student with financial need.

Hunt Scholars Program

John and Carol Hunt established the Hunt Scholars Program at the University to benefit students from a particular class at the Maria Sanchez Elementary School in Hartford. Additional contributions to the fund have come from their friends, Richard Shima and Ed Budd.

Dora and Antonio Iadarola Endowed Scholarship

A former History professor and History department chair, Dr. Antoinette Iadarola ’62, DAA’82, established this scholarship in memory of her parents. Scholarships are awarded to students in Mathematics, Computer Science, or the sciences with recommendation from the department head.

Wilson C. Jainsen Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Wilson Jainsen. Funds from this memorial scholarship are awarded to a deserving student.

Cecelia A. Jennings ’51 Memorial Scholarship

A bequest from Cecelia Jennings ’51 was used to establish this scholarship which is awarded to a deserving student with financial need.

Paul L. Jones Fund Scholarships

A trust was established through the will of Douglas P. Jones. The purpose of the Paul L. Jones trust is to train and educate health care professionals. Scholarships are awarded to students in the Nursing program.

Margaret Meaney Kane ’45 Endowed Scholarship

Margaret Meaney Kane ’45 established this scholarship to benefit students with financial need.

Sandra Karp M’98 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Sandra Karp, M’98 by William Karp and his four sons. Scholarships are awarded to an outstanding student with a Nutrition major.

Joan Brophy Kearney ’58 Endowed Scholarship

The family of Joan Brophy Kearney ’58 established this scholarship in memory of a beloved mother and aunt. Scholarships are awarded to students with financial need.

Ruth Kelly, RSM Ph.D. Endowed Fund

Ruth Kelly, RSM Ph.D. established this fund for a graduate nursing student (DNP/FNP) wishing to participate in a USJ sponsored or approved activity that advances the mission of Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.

Koedding Family Foundation Scholarship

Jacqueline Koedding Mott ’01, M’04 established this scholarship through the generosity of the Koedding Family Foundation. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students.

Norma C. Konefal Endowed Scholarship

Following Norma Konefal’s retirement as chair of the Nutrition and Resource Management department, a scholarship was established with gifts made in her honor. A scholarship in Ms. Konefal’s memory is awarded to a deserving student majoring in Nutrition.

Rita A. Konoski ’63 Scholarship

A bequest from Rita Konoski ’63 was used to establish this scholarship in her memory. Scholarships are awarded to worthy students with financial need.

Margaret McKelligott LaMoy ’47 Memorial Scholarship

Roy LaMoy established this scholarship in memory of his deceased wife, Margaret McKelligott LaMoy ’47. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students majoring in Nutrition.

Edward J., Mary (Maher) Lowery, and Mary F. Lowery ’57, ’63 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by their daughter, Mary F. Lowery ’57, M’63 and is awarded to a woman going into the field of Education.

Frank T. Lynch Family Endowed Scholarship

Helen Lynch ’41 established this scholarship in memory of her father. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students with preference given to Business majors.

Kathleen Magowan ’47 Endowed Scholarship

A bequest from Kathleen Magowan ’47 established this scholarship for undergraduate students in the Nursing program in need of financial assistance. Ms. Magowan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Frances Lalas Malin ’50 Endowed Scholarship in Nursing

Madonna Malin donated a scholarship in her mother’s memory. The Frances Lalas Malin ’50 Endowed Scholarship in Nursing is awarded each year to a student in the Nursing program.

Gloria Scriminger Maloney ’52 Nursing Scholarship

The Gloria Scriminger Maloney ’52 Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a student with a Nursing major. Mrs. Maloney is retired from the West Hartford Public School system where she was employed as a school nurse.

Elizabeth Markham ’51 Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Markham’s friends contributed to establish a scholarship in her honor when she retired as faculty from the University. Scholarships and an annual book award are given to students who display excellence in Mathematical Sciences and are recommended by the Mathematics department, or to an incoming student whose record indicates excellence in Mathematics.

Jean Markham ’45 Endowed Scholarship in the Humanities

This scholarship was established by Sister Claire Markham ’40, DAA’75, Ph.D., in memory of her sister, Jean Markham ’45. Scholarships in Jean’s memory are awarded to a student with a declared major in the Humanities.

Sister Claire Markham ’40 Fund for Student Research

Sister Claire Markham ’40, DAA’75, Ph.D., professor of Chemistry, sought out opportunities to engage students in research throughout her career. She established a scholarship to help fund a student researcher’s work during the summer break.

Sister Claire Markham ’40 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established with donations in memory of Sister Claire Markham ’40, Ph.D., Distinguished Alumna ’75. It is awarded to a student with a Chemistry major.

Michael and Stephanie Marut Endowed Scholarship

Helen C. Marut ’54 created this scholarship in memory of her parents. This scholarship is awarded to a student requiring financial aid.

Lisa McCarthy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Lisa McCarthy. Scholarships are awarded to juniors in the Nutrition and Resource Management programs.

McCormack Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Margaret F. Teal as a memorial to the McCormack family. Scholarships are awarded to a deserving young woman with financial need.

Sister Mary Rosa McDonough Scholarship

Established with a bequest from Mercedes Murphy ’44, these scholarships are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

John F. McShea and Mary J. Meikle McShea Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in need of financial assistance.

Barbara Ann McVeigh ’68 Scholarship

Pamela McVeigh established this scholarship in memory of her sister, Barbara McVeigh ’68. Scholarships are awarded to a student with financial need with preference given to someone pursuing Nursing, History, or Fine Arts.

Mary H. Meaney ’42 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to a student with financial need. This scholarship was established in memory of Mary Meaney ’42 by her sister, Margaret Meaney Kane ’45.

Mercy Northeast Education Assistance Award

A gift from the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community, the Mercy Northeast Education Assistance Award provides a scholarship to those with a financial need that cannot be met from other sources.

Marguerite M. Miceli Scholarship for Pharmacy Students

This scholarship was established in memory of Marguerite M. Miceli by her family and is awarded to a  student at the School of Pharmacy.

Walter I. and Mary P. Mitchell ’90, M’94, DAA’12, Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mary Pringle Mitchell ’90, M’94, Distinguished Alumna 2012, in memory of her husband. It is awarded to a nontraditional student who demonstrates a commitment to Gerontology through course work and field study.

Richard F. Mooney and Arline Carroll Mooney Endowed Scholarship

The Honorable Arline R. Mooney ’44, DAA’81 established this scholarship in memory of her parents. Scholarships in their memory are awarded to students who are Spanish-speaking, Hispanic, or African American.

Dr. and Mrs. Vincent D. Motto Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is a gift from Louise Motto Setaro ’53 in memory of her parents and provides aid to a deserving student with financial need.

Right Reverend Thomas P. Mulcahy Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to students with financial need.

Allyn R. Munger and Emily D. Munger Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Mary V. Munger ’39 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

A bequest from Mary V. Munger ’39, DAA’79 established these two scholarships — one in her parents’ memory and the other as her legacy. Scholarships are awarded to students with financial need.

John and Nancy Narden Endowed Scholarship

Joyce Narden ’67 established this scholarship in memory of her parents. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate women concentrating in Education or Art History.

Dr. B. Catherine Noble ’47, DAA’75 Endowed Scholarship

Established with a bequest from Catherine Noble ’47, DAA’75. Dr. Noble was the first African-American woman to be promoted to Colonel in the Army Medical Specialist Corp. She served as a Trustee of the University from 1994 to 2002. Scholarships are awarded to students majoring in Nutrition and Health Sciences.

Helen T. Noniewicz Award in Mathematics

This scholarship was established with gifts from Dr. Stanley Noniewicz and Irene Lasota, siblings of Helen Noniewicz, to honor her. It is awarded in memory of Ms. Noniewicz to a junior or senior who displays merit in Mathematics.

M. Obregon M’74 Women in Science Endowed Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to an undergraduate or graduate female student majoring in Mathematics or Sciences.

Sister M. Consolata O’Connor ’39 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established with gifts to honor Dr. Consolata O’Connor, RSM, ’39, who served as President of the University from 1969 to 1984. She was granted the titles of President Emerita, Trustee Emerita, Faculty Emerita, and was awarded a Distinguished Alumna Award in 1985. Scholarships are awarded in her memory to a female undergraduate student with financial need who has demonstrated excellence in her chosen profession.

O’Connor/Furshay Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Rosemary O’Connor Furshay in memory of her father, John J. O’Connor, and her husband, Joseph P. Furshay. Scholarships from this endowment are awarded to deserving students.

Mary P. O’Flaherty Scholarship

Ms. O’Flaherty lived locally and taught Latin and Greek in Hartford Public Schools. She left a bequest to establish this scholarship that is awarded to deserving students with financial need, preferably from Hartford, Connecticut.

Kathleen Campion O’Neill ’50 Endowed Scholarship

Kathleen Campion O’Neill ’50 established this scholarship with a bequest. Scholarships are awarded to a student in Education who has demonstrated both achievement and financial need.

Catherine B. O’Sullivan Scholarship

This scholarship was established through a bequest from Attorney E.T. O’Sullivan, in memory of his wife, Catherine Bohan O’Sullivan. Scholarships are awarded to students from Torrington, Connecticut.

Lillian J. and George E. Parsons Scholarship

David R. Smith established this scholarship with a gift in memory of his deceased wife, Joan M. Smith ’52. The scholarship is named in honor of Joan’s parents Lillian J. and George E. Parsons. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students.

Elizabeth Shay Pascucci ’71 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student qualifying for a merit scholarship. It was established by William Pascucci, his family, and friends in memory of his wife, Elizabeth Shay Pascucci ’71.

Constance Miano Pawlow Endowed Scholarship

Salvatore Miano established this scholarship in memory of his sister, Constance Miano Pawlow. Scholarships are awarded to a female student currently enrolled or entering the University as a Nursing major. Students must have economic need and show an appropriate preparation for study in the field of Nursing with special consideration given to students currently working in a medically-related field.

Dr. Judith Perkins Endowed Scholarship in the Humanities

This Scholarship was created in 2019 by the family and friends of Dr. Judith Perkins and is awarded to an undergraduate studying the humanities.

Pinnington Special Education Scholarships

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Jane Pinnington. Scholarships are awarded to students with a Special Education major.

Right Reverend John F. Quinn Scholarship

Established with a gift from Right Reverend Monsignor John F.X. Quinn, scholarships are awarded to a student with financial need.

Dr. Shyamala Raman Endowed Scholarship

Established by Faculty Emerita Dr. Shyamala Raman, this scholarship is awarded to a junior-year student from a refugee family living in Hartford or to an Asian-American student from Hartford who is pursuing the field of Health Sciences at the University of Saint Joseph. If there is no student meeting the criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate with financial need.

Kuckel-Reynolds Family Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was given by Rosemary Kuckel Reynolds ’62 and her husband, James Reynolds, for a female Junior or Senior who exemplifies the characteristics of USJ’s core values and who is active in, and contributes to, the USJ community.

Catherine A. Roche Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established with a bequest from Catherine A. Roche, a friend of the University. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students from Hartford County who have financial need.

Stephen G. and Nellie Uccello Romaine ’54 Endowed Scholarship

Nellie Uccello Romaine ’54 established this scholarship for a student in need of financial aid with a major in English or Chemistry, with a preference for a student studying for teacher certification in secondary education.

Sister Patricia J. Rooney, RSM, ’58, M’72, DAA’00 Endowed Scholarship

Helen Ryan lived in the area of the University. A scholarship was established in her memory that is awarded to deserving students.

Marita A. Ryan ’50, DAA’84 Endowed Scholarship

Marita A. Ryan ’50, Distinguished Alumna ’84, established this scholarship to be awarded to a deserving female junior or senior with a Mathematics or Science major, who has demonstrated financial need and is in good academic standing.

Mary and J. Lawrence Ryan Endowed Scholarship

Established by M. Jane Ryan ’54, Distinguished Alumna 2012, to assist an undergraduate woman studying Early Childhood Education.

Saint John Paul II Endowed Scholarship

An anonymous donor established this scholarship for any student in need of financial assistance.

Herbert Schwan Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established by Nelly Rojas Schwan, Ph.D., LCSW, ACSW and her brother Dr. Camilo José Rojas, in memory of Hubert Schwan, Nelly’s husband. This scholarship is awarded to both a traditional and non-traditional Social Work student.

Sisters of Mercy Endowed Scholarship

Alumni contributed to establish this scholarship as a lasting legacy to the Sisters of Mercy. Scholarships are awarded to students who graduated from a Mercy high school, or who have been recognized for exceptional academic achievement and outstanding community service, especially to the poor, during their high school career.

Clayton H. and Muriel M. Smart Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a gift from Muriel M. Smart in memory of her husband, Clayton H. Smart. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who has financial need and is in good academic standing.

Harvey and Virginia Smith Memorial Scholarship

Ann Rosetta ’44, DAA’81 and her sister, Frances Rosetta, gave this scholarship in memory of their aunt and uncle. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students with financial need.

These two scholarships were established with a gift from Dorothy Spalla ’46. Scholarships are awarded to a student with financial need.

Kathleen Daly Stingle ’58, DAA’01 Endowed Scholarship

Established by Robert and Janice Stingle in memory of Kathleen Daly Stingle ’58, Distinguished Alumna 2001, this scholarship is awarded to a student  in the History and Political Science program.

The Howard T. and Gail Flaherty Sturdevant ’58 Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2020, this scholarship is to be awarded to an African-American student with financial need.

Sullivan Scholarship in Nursing

Mary Q. Sullivan gave a gift to establish this scholarship in memory of her late husband. Scholarships are awarded annually to a student exhibiting financial need and academic achievement while clearly demonstrating their commitment to the art and the science of a career in Nursing.

Beatrice W. Sullivan, Helen V. Sullivan & Sr. Helene Marie Sullivan Scholarship

A bequest from Helen M. Ryan was used to establish this scholarship. It is awarded to students with financial need who demonstrate academic excellence with preference for students from the New Britain area.

Sister M. Ethelreda Sullivan Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of M. Ethelreda Sullivan, RSM, who was the Mother Superior of the Connecticut Community of the Sisters of Mercy from 1950 to 1958. Scholarships in her memory are awarded to students with financial need and who most qualify as a religious and educational student.

Susan M. Sullivan ’63 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a woman majoring in Biology or Chemistry.

Richard E. & Nancy Lattanzio Swanson ’57 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Richard E. Swanson to honor his wife, Nancy Lattanzio Swanson ’57. It is awarded to a woman studying in the field of Nursing who attended a secondary school in Massachusetts or Connecticut.

Tucker Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Dorothy Billingsley, in memory of her parents, Anna E. Tucker and Dennis J. Tucker. It is awarded to a deserving student.

Antonina Uccello ’44, H’71 Endowed Scholarship

Antonina Uccello ’44, H’71, DAA’78 gave a gift to create this scholarship. A former mayor of the City of Hartford, Ms. Uccello was the first woman mayor of a capital city in the United States. An annual scholarship in her honor is awarded to a student majoring in American History.

University of Saint Joseph Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student.

Margherita C. Valente Memorial Scholarship

Established by Margaret Valente Tedone, this scholarship is given in memory of her mother, Margherita Valente. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students majoring in Special Education.

Catherine H. Vargas ’37 and Mary J. Colwell ’65 Endowed Scholarship

Catherine Vargas ’37 established this scholarship as a lasting legacy from her niece, Mary Colwell ’65, and herself. Scholarships are awarded to students majoring in either Accounting or History.

Josephine E. Verrengia ’37 Endowed Scholarship

A bequest from Joseph E. Verrengia ’37 was used to create this scholarship which is awarded to students concentrating their studies in the social sciences with preference for students in the Social Work program.

Teresa and Alfred Verrengia Memorial Scholarship

Josephine Verrengia ’37 established this scholarship in memory of her parents. Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate a commitment to community service.

Vitamaur Scholarships

This scholarship was established with a gift from the Vitamaur Foundation where Dr. Maurice F. O’Connell, a Trustee of the University, was president of the Foundation. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students of outstanding character and personality.

Rita Troy Weidman ’79 & Thomas Weidman Nursing Scholarship

Rita Troy Weidman ’79 and her husband, Thomas Weidman, established this scholarship which is awarded to academically deserving students who meet the academic criteria of the Nursing department.

Dr. Marylouise Welch Nursing Scholarship

When Dr. Marylouise Welch retired from the University’s Nursing department, she worked to create this scholarship to assist an undergraduate woman in the Nursing program.

Meredith N. Wetstine Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a bequest from Meredith N. Wetstine. A scholarship in Ms. Wetstine’s memory is awarded to a deserving young woman.

Antoinette Dolores Zorsky Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Margaret C. Zorsky ’71 in memory of her mother. It is awarded to an undergraduate student who is in need of financial assistance and is preferably from the state of New Jersey.
