USJ Athletics is on the rise! We field 16 varsity teams, as well as intramurals, and numerous recreation and wellness programs, and welcome more visitors to our campus than ever before. We continuously strive to enhance and improve the Blue Jays experience, for our fans and our athletes.

With nearly 150 student athletes competing on our Multisport Field and nearly 100 in baseball and softball, USJ now attracts large and supportive crowds to these venues. We aspire to deliver enjoyable, comfortable, and memorable fan experiences for all, in part by adding new accessible grand-stand style seating for our three new turf fields.  The plan is to address seating in a phased approach as funding allows; ideally, we will address the multi-sport field first, followed by softball and then baseball.

Not only does this benefit Blue Jays fans, but it will provide a better in-game experience for our student-athletes as well. The total cost for this initiative is estimated at $400,000 and naming opportunities will be developed to meet donor interest.

The Blue Jays Experience at USJ 

Over the last five years, USJ has made significant investments in Athletic facilities to ensure that the fan experience reflects USJ’s Core Vale of Hospitality.

The Elizabeth Ferry Speers Tennis Complex with six newly-renovated post-tension courts completed in fall 2019.  The lined and fully wind-screened Biscayne blue courts, located in the heart of our athletic fields are home to Men’s and Women’s Tennis.
A major expansion to the O’Connell Athletic Center, home of the brand-new NCAA regulation James A. Calhoun Gymnasium, the Hoffman Lobby for receptions and student activities, the Beekley Center for Student Health and Wellness, a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center, and updated locker rooms, offices and seminar rooms. 
A new, lighted multisport turf field for Women’s Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, and Men’s and Women’s Soccer 
A new all-turf softball field, with full-length fencing, home and away dugouts, bullpens, and batting cages 
Renovations to the Bruyette Natatorium 
The brand-new all-turf baseball field, opened in Spring 2024

Our success has earned us recognition:

  • NCAA:
    • USJ hosted the first two rounds of the DIII Men’s Basketball Championship
    • USJ hosted the first round of DIII Men’s Lacrosse Tournament
  • GNAC:
    • Joshua Ingham and Dan Szewczak named Athletic Communications Staff of the Year
    • Megan Bosworth and Emily Badal named Athletic Training Staff of the Year
    • USJ won the Men’s GNAC Commissioner’s Cup
    • Michael Torres ‘23, was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year
    • Athletic Director Amanda Devitt was named the Executive of the Year
  • USJ has been featured in local and national press outlets and was the setting for a four-part ESPN E:60 special entitled The Calhoun Project
