USJ Family Nurse Practitioner students get selected for CVS Health Foundation Scholarship

Reading Time: 2 minutes

When USJ students get selected for a very competitive scholarship, you know there are going to be cheers heard around campus. Our entire community is grateful to the CVS Health Foundation for granting the University a $4,000 scholarship to distribute to deserving Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students.

The excitement and gratitude was led by faculty with Heidi Smolka, DNP, FNP-BC, Graduate FNP Program Director and Assistant Professor of Nursing who noted, “Many of our graduate nursing students have expressed an interest in working with a medically underserved population, and these four students were selected, in part, for having completed clinical rotations at Federally Qualified Health Centers, School-Based Health Centers and/or urban-based health care facilities. Several of those selected are also bilingual, making them especially valuable to serve this population. The scholarship award is intended to help support those students wanting to continue to serve this population as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) following graduation. The students are able to apply their $1000.00 scholarship towards their tuition, academic expenses, or to defray the costs of post-graduate expenses. The scholarship award was a very pleasant surprise for us, and I am very proud of our diverse and accomplished FNP nursing students.”

According to the CVS Health Foundation, the Advance Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant Scholarship program is one way they help close the shortage gap of primary care physicians in the U.S. Special thanks to Nursing Department Administrative Assistant Filomena (Mena) Fiore who took the initiative on behalf of USJ to apply for the scholarship

Congratulations for being awarded this scholarship goes to:

Honored to be a recipient, Christable Ansah said, “It is wonderful to know that the CVS Health Foundation supports students like me to achieve their dreams. This scholarship means so much to me because it came when I needed it the most. It allowed me to get all my textbooks, school supplies and pay my student fees just in time to begin the next semester. Thank you, CVS.”

Savitha Chandramohan, remarked on why this scholarship is so valuable, “I was very happy and proud when I heard I am one of the CVS scholarship winners. The money helped me to apply for the license exam and exam preparation. Thanks to CVS Health Foundation for providing this opportunity to me. Further, I would like to say that I had a great experience at USJ, and got a chance to meet diverse groups of students and excellent staff.”

Anylen Ruiz also shared her gratitude, “I am incredibly thankful to have been chosen as a recipient of the CVS Health Foundation scholarship.
