Students interested in event planning and sports management should take note of this opportunity: you could be part of Super Bowl LVI, which takes place in Los Angeles, Calif., in February 2022!
This volunteer opportunity includes pre-game events around the SoFi arena and Game Day staffing. “USJ students take advantage of a range of internships, clinical or field placements, or part-time jobs, all to gain work experience, develop and practice skills, network, and generally learn about working in their desired field. Now in its second year, this experience will provide our students with a behind-the-scenes perspective on a large sporting event such as the Super Bowl,” said Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Director of the Sport Management and Promotion Program Janet Howes, Ph.D.
Last year Kevin Bilbraut ’22 and Alison O’Neill ’22 attended, and this year the plan is to recruit a few more students for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Bilbraut said of his experience, “We were able to meet some famous people because of the section we were working! We were responsible for escorting the NFL 100 Team from their suite to the field and then back again. I would say this was one of the best experiences of my life.”
“The Super Bowl opportunity gave me great insight into everything that goes on behind the cameras and television aspects of a large event like the Super Bowl. The most important thing I learned from this experience is that there is much more that goes into large sporting events like this than anyone would ever expect,” said O’Neill.
Dr. Howes is excited to return in February and bring more USJ students along. While there is a cost to participate, she has secured University funding again this year to help offset student expenses for the trip. A nonrefundable down payment must be paid this fall.
