USJ Updates Winter Sports Plan

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Following the recent announcement from the NCAA, which stated that Division III winter championships were officially canceled for the 2020-21 academic year, the University of Saint Joseph(USJ) has put together plans for its winter sports programs after thorough review and continuing consultation with campus leadership and at the local, state and federal levels. This will affect the winter programs of men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and diving at USJ.

NCAA CANCELATION RELEASE

With this recent decision from the NCAA and after the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Presidents’ Council unanimously voted to cancel the GNAC winter regular season conference schedule and championships on November 2, it leaves each GNAC institution the option to individually make plans for its winter programs for student-athlete training, conditioning opportunities, and/or non-conference competition consistent with federal and state public health recommendations, the NCAA, and institutional guidelines.

With the health and well-being of students and staff remaining the highest priority, USJ will allow each winter sports program the option to still compete against other institutions in a limited capacity over the course of the next month. Men’s and women’s swimming & diving will also have the option to participate in virtual meets against opposing institutions. Spectators will not be permitted at any home event and these plans are subject to change.

The GNAC Presidents’ Council has not yet made a final determination on the status of spring sports. It will continue to meet regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, as all options will be thoroughly evaluated to make an informed decision based on both federal and state health and safety guidelines.
