Freshman Alexia Weir (Hebron, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women’s swimming and diving team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by conference officials on Monday afternoon. It marks the second GNAC weekly award for Weir in her young career after she helped lead the Blue Jays in a dual meet this past Friday evening against Westfield State.
Weir once again stood out above the rest despite a 157-122 dual meet loss to the Westfield State Owls this past Friday night inside the Bruyette Natatorium. She broke the varsity and freshman school records in the 100-yard backstroke, clipping the varsity record by nearly three-quarters of a second after finishing with a time of 1:03.61. The record was three years old and was previously held by Veronika Lataweic at 1:04.29.
The Hebron rookie also trimmed down her own freshman 100 individual medley (IM) record with a second-place swim of 1:05.74, 1.26 seconds clear of her previous record which she had set back on November 2. Her effort was just shy of breaking the varsity 100 IM record which stands at 1:05.02. Weir won three events overall on night against the Owls, touching the wall first in the 50 back, 100 back, and as a member of the 200 medley relay team.
Weir and the Blue Jays return to the pool on Tuesday, January 21, in a dual meet at Eastern Connecticut State. The action kicks off at 6:00 p.m.
