Alternative Spring Break (ASB) has been a tradition at USJ for many years, offering students the opportunity to participate in different service projects off campus during spring break. This year’s theme was “Mercy in the City,” which took place from March 11 – March 15, 2019. It demonstrated the University’s core value of Compassionate Service – to promote, support, and facilitate caring service as an integral part of all teaching and learning experiences – in the city of Hartford.
“For my first experience in the ASB program, I really practiced compassion. Volunteering at each destination was eye opening to the needs of the Hartford community and to how we can help as part of that community. After all, a community welcomes fellowship, and fellowship welcomes compassion,” said Jessica Marcos ’22.

“I want my students to not only see, but feel a difference. By volunteering in Hartford, we can really see the impact in our community.” said Liza Bocchichio, assistant coordinator of Community Engagement. “Since USJ was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, we pride ourselves on providing acts of mercy year-round.”
