Grit: Get it, Use it, Share it

The Women’s Leadership Center (WLC) at the USJ has a clear mission focused on life-long learning:

  • Provide multigenerational experiences within a diverse community
  • Build a collaborative, inclusive value-based environment in which individuals develop new and enhance existing leadership skills
  • Offer educational programs, including professional and executive education
  • Support research related to women’s leadership
  • Promote mentorship and sponsorship programs

The WLC offers educational programs that include panels of leaders knowledgeable and experienced about a topic who can share data and real-life insights with our community. Recently, the Center hosted a program, Got Grit? focused on building and sharing traits that are statistically proven to help individuals succeed in achieving their long term goals. The world’s leading expert on Grit, Angela Duckworth writes in her book, GRIT, The Power of Passion and Perseverance, that there are six main personality traits that you can develop and continue to improve on throughout your life to make you more successful:

  • Courage
  • Endurance and having long-term goals with follow-through
  • Resilience with optimism, confidence, and creativity
  • Conscientiousness with an achievement oriented vs. dependable approach
  • Focus on excellence vs. perfection
  • Growth mindset with the ability to technically and psychologically learn from your mistakes to improve your future performance

“Our panel of women leaders and moderator from a range of industries, including two USJ alums, shared with the audience how the traits of Grit helped them be more successful at work and at home,” said University of Saint Joseph President Rhona Free.

The WLC will host a follow-up workshop on Grit on Jan. 11, 2019 in Mercy Hall, Crystal Room. More information about the WLC is available at
