Internship Success: Megan Burke ’21

Reading Time: 1 minute

Megan Burke ’21 is a Mathematics major at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). Over the summer of 2019, Burke worked as a Marketing and Human Resources intern at BL Companies, an architecture, engineering, environmental, and land surveying firm in Hartford. She landed this internship with her two years of experience working in the Office of Marketing and Public Affairs at USJ.

“I had a great experience at BL Companies,” said Burke. “Not only were all of the people very welcoming and helpful, but they put a lot of trust in all of their interns.”

During her internship, Burke worked on a variety of projects, including applicant review, social media, marketing contracts, and resume/project sheet review. A large portion of her time was spent working in the applicant tracking system. As the company caught wind of her strong work ethic, they began assigning her jobs outside the responsibilities of the corporate intern position.

“I spent a week in the architecture department, working in a system called Procore,” she explained. “This system distributes new and completed requests for information and submittals between clients and our architects and engineers.”

With such a positive experience this summer, Burke accepted an offer to continue her internship with BL Companies during the fall semester. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career in actuarial science. While that was not the focus of this internship, she feels that this experience helped her learn a lot about herself as a worker and discover more about the business world. She hopes to return to the company for a second summer.
