Sophomore Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men’s swimming and diving team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men’s Athlete of the Week, announced by conference officials Monday afternoon. It marks the first GNAC weekly award for Lynch in his young career, after leading the Blue Jays in a dual meet win this past Tuesday against Eastern Connecticut.
Lynch and the Blue Jays had a program-defining performance in a 143-47 win over Eastern on January 21. Lynch added wire-to-wire victories in the 50 Back and 50 Free, the former in 24.71 seconds, and the latter in 29.05, 2.3 seconds ahead of second place. He also claimed victory in the 100 IM. 143 was the most points ever scored in a dual or double dual meet in program history.
This is the first career GNAC weekly nod for Lynch, and just the second GNAC weekly nod in program history. Lynch currently shares four varsity relay records in the 200 and 400 Free, and the 200 and 400 Medley.
Saint Joseph returns to the pool for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships on Friday, January 31 at 6:00 p.m. The three-day meet will be held at the Wellesley Sports Center, on the campus of Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Mass. Start times for each day, including prelims, can be found here.
