March 25, 2020 USJ Response to COVID-19

Dear USJ students,

Today, I want to thank you for your willingness to adapt to new modes of learning, your kindness to each other, and your cooperation with all of the changes in campus and residence life during the Stay Home, Stay Safe period. Your faculty and all staff at USJ are focused on improving upon and supplementing the services that are now being provided to you online, by phone, or by text. In addition to the information distributed on March 23, we have updated resources for you to use and some new information.

  • The Office of Information Technology, including the IT Service Desk, is providing support remotely while the main Computer Lab in McDonough Hall is closed. Please visit here to start your IT support.
  • USJ continues to provide students with the services needed to be successful inside and outside the classroom. Contact information for remote services is available here.
  • Student Affairs staff will be working with the Student Government Association and clubs and organizations to arrange virtual meetings and to continue operations and conduct elections. Student events and activities will be postponed to the fall semester. Although it will not be held in May, there will still be a commencement ceremony— USJ will hold Class of 2020 graduation events at some time in the future that will give graduates and their families a chance to celebrate together.
  • Student activity fees for first-year, sophomore, and junior students will be carried over and included in expanded fall activities. Graduating seniors will have their graduation fee waived in recognition of the fact the seniors will not be able to participate in the fall semester activities.
  • We understand that some students will find it hard to pay for meals now that they cannot eat in the Dining Hall. The Business Office is evaluating adjustments to student bills for students who had purchased a meal plan and will process any resulting refunds owed as soon as possible. Refunds or credits for some portion of residence hall payments are being calculated for residential students based on each student’s room assignment and in consideration of financial aid and scholarships. Individual notification will be sent in the coming weeks. Thank you for your patience as these refund calculations are confirmed for each student residing in campus housing. We are aware that meal plan reimbursements are more critical now and do not want to delay them.
  • The mailroom is closed. If you are expecting something critical to providing remote education or maintaining your research, please reach out directly to Scott Bernier at [email protected]. He will make an individual plan with you to handle the situation

With the global outbreak of COVID-19, many of us have family or friends here in Connecticut or around the world who have been affected. As we think of our loved ones, I would like to share this prayer from the Mercy International Association:

God of Love and Mercy –

We pray for our world – for all of us, each one now in some way impacted by COVID-19, but especially for those persons who are ill, those who have lost loved ones, and those whose personal and work lives have been severely disrupted by the reach of this virus.

We give thanks for the tender care of the sick by doctors, nurses, and health care workers; for the generous and willing service of volunteers; and for the imagination and dedication of researchers seeking a cure.

We are grateful for those who share wise advice with us; those whose work creates healthy environments for us; those who put our needs before theirs, our safety before theirs, our well-being before theirs.

May we each be supportive of one another, considerate of one another and generous to one another in this difficult and uncertain time.
