USJ celebrates Honors Program graduates

The USJ Honors Program held its annual senior night which recognizes and celebrates the program’s graduates on April 22. The ceremony included certificates and medals for students who completed the Honors Program’s requirements and either graduated in December, moved into one of USJ’s 3+3 programs this year, or will graduate in May. Family, friends, faculty and staff attended this celebratory event.

The evening began with opening remarks from Jennifer Cote, Honors Program Director and associate professor of History and from President Rhona Free.

Two Honors students then presented on their Honors Independent Study projects. Lucy Hardee, Social Work’24 spoke about her trip to Germany last summer, which resulted in an honors paper about how Germany and the United States deal differently with their shameful pasts. Syed Ali, Biology and Health Science’24 then spoke about his studies with Irene Reed Ph.D., chair and professor of Biology. The two conducted a science communication study about endometrial cancer using 𝕏 posts.

After the presentations, the 22 graduating students were called up to receive their certificates and medals, while their future plans and favorite Honors memories were read aloud. Afterward, pins were given to those students (both graduates and continuing students) who exceeded their community service requirement. Beginning this spring semester, Honors students are required to complete two hours of community service. Students who completed eight or more hours received the exceptional hours of service pin.
