Jahana Hayes, M’12, DAA’17, became the first African-American woman elected to Congress in Connecticut during the 2018 midterm elections. Hayes, who was named the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, previously served as a history teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury. She earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Saint Joseph in 2012, and was honored by her alma mater in 2017 with a Distinguished Alumni Award.
