Sophomore forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men’s soccer team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by conference officials. It marks the second GNAC Player of the Week nod for Anderson so far this season and in his career.
Anderson netted all three of the Blue Jays’ goals in a 1-1 week, including the game-winner in overtime on Saturday to lift USJ over Suffolk, 2-1, en route to earning his second GNAC Player of the Week award this season. Anderson continued his impressive sophomore campaign by logging his 11th, 12th, and 13th goals of the season to now sit in sole possession of second place on the GNAC goal-scoring list.
The six-foot-one Bloomfield product potted his first goal of the week in the 74th minute on Wednesday at Johnson & Wales, trying to spark a USJ comeback that fell just short to the league’s only unbeaten team. He followed it up with a pair of goals on Saturday versus Suffolk, getting his first in the 55th minute with a perfect header off a USJ corner kick, before spinning and firing home the game-winner in overtime to take down the Rams in the 100th minute.
Anderson has now scored in nine of the 13 games that he has played in so far this season, including six of his last seven. He has also scored in seven of eight GNAC contests on the year and becomes just the second player on the conference circuit to repeat as GNAC Player of the Week through eight weeks.
The USJ men’s soccer team is back in GNAC action with another key conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Regis. Kick off between the Blue Jays and Pride is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
