Freshman Alexia Weir (Hebron, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women’s swimming and diving team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by conference officials on Monday afternoon. It marks the first GNAC weekly award for Weir in her young career after she helped lead the Blue Jays to a 139-135 dual meet victory this past Saturday over Colby-Sawyer.
Weir won two individual events and finished second in another in a 139-135 wire-to-wire dual meet win over GNAC foe Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at home inside Bruyette Natatorium. She was in a must-win situation heading into the penultimate event, the 200 Individual Medley, and she delivered, defeating freshman Mary Steward (Saco, Maine) of Colby-Sawyer to the wall with a time of 2:25.19, more than three seconds in the clear to guarantee USJ the overall victory. Weir won in the 200 Free in addition to the 200 IM, dominating the competition by more than 13 seconds, with a final time of 2:11.03. Weir also had a close runner-up finish in the 100 Backstroke, just six-tenths of a second away from capturing a third win on the day.
Weir and the Blue Jays will be back in action next on Saturday, December 7, when they compete in the Connecticut Cup, hosted by Wesleyan University at 10:00 a.m.
