Student Health Services

If you encounter an error message when logging in to myHealth, click anywhere on the myHealth landing page to prompt an additional log in opportunity. If this is unsuccessful, it is likely the error message is due to one of the following:

• You just received your USJ credentials. Please allow 24-48 hours after receiving your credentials and try again.
• You are not signed into the University’s system. Please log in to my.usj.edu and select the myHealth Quick Link as described above.
• You are an employee of USJ. If that is the case, you are exempt from all health requirements and will not have access to the portal.
• You are in a program that is strictly and fully online. If that is the case, you are exempt from all health requirements and may not have access to the portal.

If you continue to have difficulty, contact the USJ IT help desk by submitting a ticket through MyIT.

• Health forms are automatically assigned to students in myHealth based upon their program of study.
• Health records submitted by email or fax are not accepted directly for submission. Faxed documents will be forwarded to the student for form completion and upload to myHealth.
• You are able to save your progress and complete any form later if needed.
• You will be unable to submit certain forms without attaching required supporting documentation.
• Enter all immunization and other dates during form completion. To satisfy the requirements, you must have corresponding supporting documentation for all entries.
• If you are unable to submit a form despite attaching documentation, it is likely that the file you have uploaded exceeds size limits. Separate multiple page documents or resize the file and try again.
• You may use the Document Upload tab to submit any additional separate health documents.

The State of Connecticut requires all college and university students to provide documentation of immunization or positive titers to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.

Students who plan to reside in University housing must also provide documentation of vaccination against meningococcal serogroups ACWY within the five years prior to housing entry.

Health requirements are determined by the University, and by some academic programs, with consideration given to the following:

• State of Connecticut immunization requirements for college students
• CDC immunization recommendations
• Guidance from accrediting bodies and professional medical organizations
• Clinical placement site requirements, if applicable

NON-MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS

The State of Connecticut no longer recognizes non-medical immunization exemptions, nor does the University of Saint Joseph.

However, a non-medical exemption may be granted if all of the following criteria are met: You must produce a valid non-medical exemption notarized, dated, and issued in the State of Connecticut prior to 4/28/2021 and which was filed and in use at a previous educational institution in Connecticut. USJ is unable to grant any exceptions to this regulation.

Some programs have additional immunization requirements to participate in clinical practicums or internships. Students who wish to be exempted from any requirement for non-medical reasons should coordinate with their program to (a) find a clinical or internship site without a specific requirement, and/or (2) submit a non-medical exemption to each clinical or internship site directly for approval. USJ cannot guarantee that there will be an available clinical or internship site without a specific requirement or that a clinical or internship site will accept a non-medical vaccine exemption.

REGISTRATION HOLDS

Failure to complete the required immunization and health forms and provide proof of adequate immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella will result in a registration hold being placed on your account. The hold will prevent you from registering for future classes and will only be removed once all requirements have been met.

MOVING IN TO UNIVERSITY HOUSING

Failure to complete any of the required immunization and health forms and provide proof of adequate immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and meningococcal ACWY will result in being prohibited to move into University housing until all requirements have been met.

If you cannot locate or obtain your immunization records, you must get revaccinated or submit positive quantitative titers to the relevant diseases. Titers are blood tests, ordered by a health care provider, that check for disease antibodies to gauge your level of immunity.

• State immunization registries
• Your high school: Many US public high schools keep academic records, which include immunization records, for up to 30 years after graduation.
• Your previous college or university: Many US colleges and universities keep health records for seven or more years after your last date of attendance.

Meningitis and bloodstream infections are the two most common types of meningococcal infections. Both are serious and can be deadly in a matter of hours. People spread meningococcal bacteria through close or lengthy contact with other people.

Symptoms of meningococcal disease can first appear as a flu-like illness and rapidly worsen. The most common symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, and stiff neck. Additional symptoms may include confusion, nausea, vomiting, and eyes being sensitive to light.

Symptoms of bloodstream infection may include cold hands and feet, diarrhea or nausea with or without vomiting, fatigue, fever and chills, rapid breathing, severe aches or pain in the muscles, joints, chest, or abdomen. In later stages, a dark purple rash may be present.

Call a healthcare provider right away if you think you might have meningococcal disease. Even with antibiotic treatment, 10-15% of people with meningococcal disease will die. One in 5 survivors will have long-term disabilities, such as brain damage, deafness, loss of limb(s), and/or nervous symptom problems.

Vaccination offers the best protection against meningococcal disease. Vaccination against meningococcal disease is available without a prescription at most pharmacies, such as CVS or Walgreens. All students are encouraged to be fully vaccinated against meningococcal serogroups ACWY and B.

Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection that affects the liver and can be transmitted through blood or sexual contact.

Symptoms of hepatitis B may include dark urine, clay-colored stools, fatigue, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice (yellow skin or eyes). Many people with hepatitis B don’t look or feel sick. Even without symptoms, you can still pass hepatitis B to someone else.

Vaccination offers the best protection against hepatitis B infection. Vaccination against hepatitis B is available without a prescription at most pharmacies, such as CVS or Walgreens. You may have been vaccinated in childhood, but you may be unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. All students are encouraged to be fully vaccinated against hepatitis B.

If you will be under age 18 at the time of move-in or semester start, you must complete one additional form, the Permission to Treat form.

After the form is completed and signed by a parent/guardian, submit it to [email protected].

You do not have to submit any documentation and no forms are required for enrollment.

Individuals whose primary status is as an employee are exempt from health requirements and do not have to complete or submit any forms or documents. Individuals whose primary status is as a student are subject to the health requirements as listed.

There are additional health requirements for participation in clinical placements. Most questions regarding those requirements should be directed to the program directly. You may direct clinical questions to Student Health Services.

Student Health Services is not able to provide clinical services to fulfill health requirements for enrollment, clinical placement, internships, fellowships, or student teaching.

Vaccines are available without a prescription at most chain pharmacies, such as CVS or Walgreens, and are available by appointment at GoHealth Urgent Care.

We recommend GoHealth Urgent Care for primary care services until you have established care locally.

International Student Insurance FAQs

All vaccinations must be recognized by the WHO to be considered valid in the United States, and records should include English translation whenever possible.

If you plan to live in University housing and are not fully vaccinated upon arrival, you are expected to receive the meningococcal ACWY vaccine within 48 hours of arriving to campus or to University housing. This vaccine is available through providers local to USJ and Student Health Services will assist you.

You are expected to receive any other remaining required vaccinations within 2 weeks of entering the United States and no later than 1 week after campus/housing arrival.
