The Official Logo is best used for official University communications from the Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, the Office of Institutional Advancement, and the Office of Alumni Relations. The three main variations of the University of Saint Joseph Official Logo are configured according to available space. Each orientation consists of an icon (the shield) and the wordmark (text with the name and location of the University). In order of priority, the shield is always first, whether it is at the top or the left. The name, “University of Saint Joseph” must always be the first set of words visible in the logo, and the location of the University, Connecticut,” must sit below the University name. A yellow line separates and defines the two lines of text.
These elements must never be separated, and the orientation of text to the shield must never be reconfigured.
White Type
Use this version of the Official Logo on dark backgrounds, where the navy type version would be hard to read. The dividing line must always be yellow, except when the logo is displayed in a single color — in that case, the line should match the text color.

University Shield
At the heart of USJ’s identity is the shield, an emblem rich with history and meaning. It combines two legacies: the insignia of the Sisters of Mercy (the Cross and Crown) and the Coat of Arms of Saint Joseph.
The Coat of Arms, as described by medieval heralds, features a blue field with a silver carpenter’s square, layered over three silver lilies. The carpenter’s square honors Saint Joseph’s craft and occupation and stands for accuracy and truth. The lilies symbolize integrity and indicate that Saint Joseph was the earthly spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose purity is represented by the chaste white lily. Three flowers are used to represent the Blessed Trinity. However, in the University shield, the center flower is replaced by the cross, which, combined with the crown, represents the Sisters of Mercy under whose sponsorship the University of Saint Joseph was founded and continues to flourish.
When produced in a single color, the background of the Coat of Arms must always be the darkest part of the shield, to allow the elements to be prominent in the foreground.

University Seal
These circular seals are among USJ’s most distinguished marks and are reserved for leadership and legacy. The seals are not common logos, they are symbols of authority and respect, used exclusively when representing special offices or groups of leadership designated for ceremonial use as well as for the President, Provost, USJ Trustees, and USJ Ambassadors. The University Seal is best utilized whenever the history, founding principles, or core messages of USJ are being emphasized.
To preserve their integrity, these seals also follow strict rules: the shield background must remain the darkest element, and no alterations of any kind are permitted.

Standard Logo

Stacked with State

Horizontal*
The Standard Logo is USJ’s go-to mark for most brand applications. It’s clean, modern, and built to be flexible across different spaces with three approved variations. This version is best for promotional and less formal deliverables, giving the brand a bold yet approachable presence.
The design pairs the full University name with the “USJ” abbreviation, divided by a signature yellow line. That line is non-negotiable. It must always remain yellow unless the logo is rendered in a single color, in which case it matches the type. The type itself is locked to USJ Navy or White/KO.
Structure matters: the University name always appears to the left of the line, and the abbreviation always to the right. The orientation must never be reconfigured. This balance of full name and acronym reflects both tradition and modernity, while strategically reinforcing “USJ,” a nod to the University’s digital identity (usj.edu) and aligning with the shorthand approach seen across higher ed (think UCONN, UHART, WNE).
*Important: While this logo is a key part of the USJ brand suite, it does not replace the “with State” version and should not be used for external marketing materials.

Wordmarks
When representing the University of Saint Joseph, the full name of the University must always appear with its location — Connecticut. The order is fixed: University of Saint Joseph comes first, followed by Connecticut. The wordmark is considered official brand artwork, not editable text. It should never be retyped, recreated, or modified for any representation of the University.

Spirit Mark
The Spirit Mark consists of the letters “USJ” in our branded 1932 Blue (Navy) using the Special Forces font in Regular. This mark is a distinctive component to USJ’s brand identity and can be used independently in some circumstances. It is commonly used in Athletics.

Athletics
As a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III school, USJ has 14 varsity teams, alongside a robust intramural, recreation, and wellness program. The University is a member of both the NCAA and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Joey, the Blue Jay is USJ’s official mascot. The athletic logos flex across different formats depending on space and placement. In text, the name is written as two words with a capital B and J, Blue Jays. In logo form, it unites as one: BlueJays.
As with all USJ marks, these logos are protected artwork and are not to be altered in any way.

The Spirit Mark includes an “Athletics” variation for each athletic team the University offers and can be used on athletic uniforms, clothing, and other promotional materials for the teams. The Athletics Mark uses the Special Forces font in Italics. Outside the department of Athletics, the Regular Mark may be used on collegiate paraphernalia including, but not limited to, bumper stickers, car magnets, and other promotional materials that do not require the official University of Saint Joseph logo. Neither Mark may be used on advertisements or materials that promote academic programs, such as degree fact sheets, information session advertisements, or other academic events.

School Logos
The logo variations for each of the University of Saint Joseph’s three schools are configured according to space allowed. Each orientation consists of an icon (the shield), and the wordmark (text with name and location of the University). In order of priority, the shield is always first, whether it is at the top or the left. The name, “University of Saint Joseph,” must always be the first set of words visible in the logo, and the name of the individual school replaces “Connecticut.” It must always sit below the University name. A yellow line separates, yet unifies the two lines of text.
These elements must never be separated, and the orientation of text to the shield must never be reconfigured.

Departmental/Office Logos
For all departments and offices on USJ’s campus, there are Standard and Official logo variations. It is preferred that offices that are not related to Presidential or Alumni fields use the Standard variation.

Standard Shield Logo

The use of the Standard Shield Logo is primarily for on-campus purposes only. This is to highlight student facing departments, forming a sub-identity for USJ.
Internal Logos
The University of Saint Joseph allows the use of Internal Logos for the following internal efforts: student-led clubs, services, campaigns, and organizations. These internal logos, which offer efforts the opportunity to uniquely brand themselves, must be created or approved by the Office of Marketing & Communications before being used in print, websites, or on promotional items. Internal Logos are not interchangeable with secondary unit logos and cannot serve as a replacement for the official USJ logo.
