University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and Program Director of Computer Science Thomas Calabrese, M.S., Ph.D., and USJ Computer Science Board Member and Adjunct Professor Jim Sheusi, served as judges at Hack the Ridge, an annual hackathon sponsored by Major League Hacking at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
According to Major League Hacking, the event entailed “…a competition where students collaborate to come up with solutions to real-world problems.” During the event, participants learned new skills from workshops and guest speakers, which they used to devise a creative technological solution to any real-world problem of their choice.
Both Calabrese and Sheusi served as judges for the competition and gave presentations on the Future of Computer Science: A 10-Year Look Ahead and Android Development. “There were 21 project teams to judge and over 100 people in attendance. Student participants came from all over New Jersey and students did a fabulous job with their projects,” said Calabrese.
Some notable projects included a machine learning-based program that differentiated between regular trash and recyclables, a spatial recognition program that read sheet music, and a project that designed software and a hardware interface for a routed network over a pair of Moico Long Range Two Way Radios.
“We were so impressed with the caliber of the students participating. Special recognition goes to Michael Moschello, the senior from Ridge High School who organized the event, the professional job he did and the warm welcome and emphasis he placed on USJ’s participation,” said Calabrese.
